Are Quartz Worktops Waterproof?

Yes: the quartz surface itself is completely non-porous and waterproof; water sits on top and wipes away without soaking in or staining. The one place water can still cause a problem is around seams, edges and sink cut-outs, where a gap in the sealant (rather than the material itself) can let moisture reach the cabinet below.

Why the quartz surface is waterproof

Quartz is engineered from crushed natural quartz bound with resin under high pressure, then cured, a process that leaves no pores for water to penetrate. Unlike granite, marble or quartzite, which are porous natural stones and need periodic sealing to resist water absorption, quartz is sealed for life by its own manufacturing process. See our guide to how quartz worktop is made.

Where water can still be an issue

The worktop material itself won’t absorb water, but a few specific points in any kitchen installation need proper attention:

  • Sink cut-outs: the join between an undermount or inset sink and the worktop needs a good silicone seal to stop water tracking underneath. See our guide to undermount vs inset sinks.
  • Seams between slabs: a properly fabricated seam is sealed with resin adhesive and is not a water entry point, but a poorly finished one could be. See our guide to seams and joins.
  • Where the worktop meets the wall: a small gap behind the worktop (common where walls aren’t perfectly straight) should be sealed with silicone to prevent water running down behind, particularly near a sink or hob.

Is quartz suitable for wet areas like bathrooms?

Yes: quartz’s non-porous, waterproof surface makes it an excellent choice for bathroom and en-suite vanity tops, which are exposed to water and condensation constantly. See our guide to quartz bathroom vanity tops.

Frequently asked questions

Can water damage a quartz worktop?
No, the surface itself is fully waterproof and won’t swell, stain or degrade from water exposure. Only poorly sealed joints (around a sink, for example) could let water reach the cabinet below.

Do quartz worktops need resealing like granite?
No, quartz never needs sealing or resealing. This is one of its biggest practical advantages over porous natural stones.

Is quartz good for a kitchen sink area?
Yes: as long as the sink is properly sealed to the worktop by your fabricator, the surrounding quartz surface handles constant water exposure with no issue.
